Desktop Disappeared

My desktop and taskbar disappeared yesterday after I was trying to end a
program through the task manager and just grew impatient and just restarted
the laptop.

Now whenever I boot up, the desktop is gone but My Documents pops up. All
the programs run and I can acess most of them through My Documents, but I
can't bring up the start program list by pressingthe windows key, and nothing
happens when I right click on the desktop.

I've already tried rolling back and it didn't fix it.

Any ideas? Thanks?

Hi,

The shell entry may be damaged in the registry. From Task Manager, click
'new task' on the applications tab. Type regedit and click ok. Agree to the
UAC prompt, then expand the branches to reach this one:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Click on the Winlogon key, then on the right find the "shell" string. Double
click it, change the value data to read "explorer.exe" (without the quotes)
and click ok. Then close the registry editor and restart the system by
entering another new task as 'shutdown /r'.
