Desktop Disappeared/RPC related?

Deborah

We had the RPC problem as so many others have had and we
have worked all day and night (it is now 4 am) following
the very helpful suggestions posted here. We *seem* to
have gotten rid of the RPC/shut down/restart
issues...crossing fingers on that still...but now we
still have another problem. The way this all started for
us was a few days ago our desktop disappeared and we had
to use Task Manager to open anything. Then the RPC stuff
started. Now that RPC problems appear to be fixed, we
still do not have our desktop and are still having to use
Task Manager to open anything. Does anyone know if the
disappearing desktop is related to the RPC problem? We
did not see where anyone posted that among their
problems....do we have another issue that is not related
to the worm? Thank you for any help!

What I don't hear from you is what antivirus software you are/were
running. It's quite possible that if you weren't running *any* av
software that you have multiple virus infections. At this point, the
best thing to do is get off the net, back up your data, do a full scan
(preferably in DOS or at least Safe Mode with System Restore turned
off) and if your system is badly compromised reinstall Windows. Unless
you can provide more details?

Hi, there! We have Norton with all the latest
updates....nothing is showing in our scans, we have
scanned and checked for updates throughout the past 48
hours and all would seem clear on our system...except we
can't get our desktop to appear. We also are unable to
get Control Panel to open (tried typing control in Task
Manager but it won't load)....unable to check firewall
settings without getting into Control Panel...can't copy
files in Task Manager (won't let us). We tried running
in SafeMode but it will not open in SafeMode.

I hope that information will help with more
suggestions! :)

Thanks!

Hi,

is it possible that you followed a hint and deactivated the
rpc-service in the hardware profile.

Try this: Start c:\windows\system32\services.exe try to open the
properties of the service rpc. If this doesn't work, you have the same
problem as many people (since yesterday) I found no solution yet -
because it's impossible to restart rpc without the panel (even net
start etc. doesn't work)

This is not a very good idea. Where is this information coming from, HP?

Yes it's not a good idea :-( Actually I can't even tell you where I
got it from.

But a button that disables a service that is recursively depending on
itself for reactivitating. No warnings, etc. That's a BIG BIG BUG.
