Desktop crash

We are running XP Pro and now when IE crashes or freezes and has to be shut
down with the Task Manager, it also shuts down Windows Explorer. With
previous O/S's (W98-W2K) this just resulted in the desktop rebooting itself.
Now the desktop dies completely - no icons, no taskbar, no start button. The
only thing that works is the old faithful Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up Task
Manager and force a restart.

Has anyone else encountered this problem with XP? And is there a way around
it other than rebooting?

the ie crashing sure sounds like some BHO or something else has infiltrated
your system.

re-start explorer by bringing up the task manager, goto the application's
tab, click 'new task', type in explorer, and press return.

Thanks, but I don't think it's a spyware or virus-related problem. Our
network is about as secure as it can be, and I've seen it happen under many
systems running IE (the shut down of Explorer can't seem to distinguish
between IE and Windows Explorer), it's only on our new XP Pro machines that
the desktop completely vanishes.

Well, this isn't the answer you're looking for, but when you open task
manager, you can go under File, New Task, and then type in "explorer". It's
quicker than rebooting. I've had to do it a couple of times, but I rarely
have that problem so I really haven't tried to figure it out.

Thousands......

If your setup is as clean as you stated, this generally has to do with
updated drivers applied via MS updates or other (manual from the
manufacturer) for the display adapter. If this is the case, try a rollback
via the device manager.
