Desktop background option is grayed out

Just had my system cleaned and new anti-virus and anti-spyware software
installed. I also had my wireless networking installed (router and adaptor).
Everything is working fine except my desktop background is gone. When I go
to properties to try and bring it back or even select another one, all
options are grayed out, it won't let me choose anything.

Thanks for your reply. I did everything you suggested, but the background
continues to be nonresponsive (grayed out).

When you right-click the desktop and select Properties, see if the "Themes" tab works.
If yes, select a different theme, Apply, OK. Then go back and reset it to your original theme.

I could access the "theme" option with no problem. I was able to change it
and reset it back to it's original

1> Right click My computer and select manage
2> Click on the + next to services and applications
3> Click on services
4>You can select standard or extended view. I prefer Standard view.
5> Scroll down a bit to find themes service
6> Doubble click themes service, under general make sure the startup type is
automatic .
7> Select start if the service is not started yet.
8>If it is already started. select stop and select start again.

You may not be able to restart or start services without admin rights.
