desktop alerts

Is there a desktop alert that wil tell me that new messages have arrived, say
in the past half hour?

If I leave my desk for awhile, I'd like to know if stuff came in while I was
gone.

Version of Outlook? If 2003, you can either set the alert to stay on the
screen for longer periods or use the rule that pops up a dialog or use the
unread search folder. only the rule/dialog works in older versions.
