Deleting short cuts takes so long ?

Recently upgraded to new computer. P4 2.4mgz, 1gb ram Win XP Pro.
Although most things are now much faster than my old P2 400, when I delete a
shortcut or small group of files, it seems to take forever. Much longer
than my old system.

I'm likely not going to be of any help here. Does your Recycle Bin
seem to be functioning normally?

I guess so. I looked and it's full of deleted files & folders going back to
July - when I got the computer. I did notice that scrolling down through
the list was slow and even seemed to hang up for a minute but then it caught
up. Maybe it's too full or something. It's set at 10% of HD space which
works out to 3.2 gb of recycle bin.

The recycle bin should be emptied on a regular basis - say, once a
week. This could be the source of your problem. Right-click and empty
the bin, then reboot and defragment your system (start button,
programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmenter).

If the defragmenter comes back with a preliminary analysis that it
isn't really necessary, do it anyway. The analysis is based on a
percentage of the entire drive, not the portion used.

Hopefully the delete function will go smoother after this.
