Deleting Possible Corrupted Internet History Files

Index.dat suite (freeware) works very well deleting the various dat files.
It comes in auto install and manual setup files. I use the manual setup on
XP Pro with no problems. Read the instructions carefully. When first using I
recommend under settings\general to remove the check for "Use default file
generation routine to remove all index.dat files". I would have thought this
particular setting would have come unchecked out of the box but for some
reason the author decided to have it checked. When you do a find place a
check next to the dat files found, that you do not want to delete. Just a
little heads up. Here is the URL to the home page. Look at the list on the
left to select this particular program.

Hi:

I have Norton System Works 2004 installed which has a program Clean Sweep.
For some reason a component of the Clean Sweep Program called Fast & Safe
Cleanup can no longer delete certain internet history files. Norton says
that the index.dat file folder needs to be deleted to delete corrupted
history files, but using Windows XP this file folder cannot be deleted using
DOS.

i.e."Windows NT/2000/XP:
Because there is no method for restarting Windows NT/2000/XP to a DOS
command line, this situation is more complex for those operating systems.
Without the ability to start in DOS, the operating system maintains the file
in an "open" state, preventing its deletion. For this reason, contact
Microsoft customer support for assistance in removing the Index.dat file in
Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows XP."

Does anyone know how to delete the Index.dat file in Windows XP?

Thanks,

Tom
