deleting files xp running slow

once a week i do a disk clean up and defrag and i also use wincleaner pc care
my xp is running slow lately exspecialy in the start up and when i do a virus
scan it takes about a hour because norton is scaning so many files how do i
get rid of theses files? ive used the internet option and deleted files and
cookies but still running slow im not sure what to uncheck in the msconfig
start up cause i thought that would help but afraid i'll uncheck something
that i need

Rhonda,

Most of the utilities like Wincleaner cause more problems than they were
designed to solve. You're better off without it. As far as Norton is
concerned, I would never suggest anyone install it. But that's just me. If
you have been checking the newsgroups you will see that Norton is one of the
most problematic pieces of software that can be installed on a personal
computer.

What files are you referring to? Are these viruses or spyware that Norton
is saying it has found, or other files such as typical system files? Do you
have a spyware and/or adware scanner installed and if so, what do they find,
if anything?
