My computer is running slow. I have done all the things such as delete
cookies, Spyware, delete temp. files, defrag. Clean up excess email. I
removed Norton anti-virus, reinstalled boot disk and still slow. Running 40
gig HD and max Ram.

It's difficult to completely remove the Norton trash. Possibly Symantec has
a remover. Or go through your registry and remove/delete anything Norton or
Symantec.

Check in Task Manager>Processes>CPU. See what process is slowing you
down. System Idle value should be 99.
All others should be very low 00 or in single digits.
Save your important data, format and do a clean install of WinXP IF you
think you have tried everything else.

Please help us to help you. How much RAM is "max Ram"? What processor do you
have? Has it always been running slowly, or is thios a new phenomenon? What
anti-virus program do you run? Is it up-to-date? What anti-spyware programs
do you run? Are they up-to-date?

What does "reinstalled boot disk" mean?

Finally, when you say "running slow," can you be more specific? How slow is
slow?

that symptom means you have a lot of apps running in the background. go to
msconfig and only leave the essentials checked. If you have XP disable
indexing service

No, it doesn't "mean" that at all. There are many possible reasons for the
computer being slow. What's running in the background is only one
possibility.

No, despite what many people tell you, you should be concerned, not with how
*many* of these programs you run, but *which*. Some of them can hurt
performance severely, but others have no effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do is
determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the cost
in performance is of its running all the time. You can get more information
about these at http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.
