deleting and organizing styles

I am preparing a template for a book with many contributions. Although I am
quite comfortable with basic Office, including Word, I am new to creating
templates and styles. I am afraid, I will bother you with questions in the
next few weeks – my apologies and thanks in advance.
Here are the first two or three:
To avoid clutter, I would like to have as few styles in the template as
possible.
1. When I use any formatting command, like underline, center, or whatever,
it is automatically added to the style list. Can it be disabled and how?
2. When creating my new styles, say, for headings, named “1 Chapter titleâ€,
“2 Section title†and so on, based on Heading 1, Heading 2 and so on, is it
possible and how can I delete standard Word heading styles?
If not:
3. Can I force my styles to be at the top of the list in the drop down menu?
At the moment I am doing it by adding a numeral before the style name, e.g.:
“1 Chapter titleâ€

Thank you,

Don't delete standard Word styles (you can't, anyway, though you can hide
them). Use them, especially the built-in heading styles (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/UseBuiltInHeadingStyles.html).

The "styles" you're seeing when you add direct formatting are actually
"formatting," and you won't see them if you clear the box for "Keep track of
formatting" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options. But if you are using any
specific formatting more than twice, you should create a style for it.

Since you're obviously using Word 2002 or 2003, you can control the
visibility of styles (both in the dropdown and in the Styles and Formatting
task pane) using Custom. For more, see
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/sfpane/StylesAndFormattingPane.html. Note
also that recently used styles appear at the top of the task pane.
