Deleted Messages can't be deleted from "Deleted Items"

When I try to empty the Deleted Items folder I get an "unknown error has
occurred" message. In short, I can't delete items in the Deleted Items
folder. When I right-click and chose "empty folder" it deleted one item in
the folder but not all. Junk folder works fine. If I select items in the
Deleted Items folder and click delete the same error message pops up. Any
idea how to fix this?

I've tried to delete manually the contents of the folder via the Explorer.
When I restart Windows Mail, "Deleted Items" are always here. It's amazing
!!

The problem is when you delete the top message in the box.
The work around is to delete everything else first, then delete the top
message.

Easy!

Deleting "everything else first" doesn't work either, it does nothing and
elicits the same error.

The problem is NOT solved and it is not "easy" because it does NOT solve the
problem.

The deleted items folder simply will not empty and I cannot delete message
one by one either.

View | Layout
Turn off the Preview Pane and then try.

Nothing that was suggested does work. The message bodies appear to have been
deleted in the reading pane but the actual message list is still filled.
There is a consistent error message in the reading pane saying
"Message could not be displayed. Windows Mail encountered an unexpected
problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or
low disk space and try again". Now neither memory nor disk space is low.
Messages that properly display the content of emails can be deleted, nothing
work for the debris that's left in the "Deleted Items" box. Annoying.

You posted to a thread where the problem was the Inbox. Where is your
problem?

Deleted Items is probably corrupt.
Go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder and see where OE is
storing its data files.
Close OE.
Go to the store folder with Windows Explorer and delete Deleted Items.dbx.
With Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3 it will be a hidden file.
OE will build a new one when you reopen it.

If Deleted Items has messages you want to keep, instead of deleting it move
(not copy) it to an empty Windows folder. Then use DBXtract on the old
Deleted Items.dbx.
DBXtract ($5): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/
You can drag the recovered messages from the Windows folder back into an OE
folder in the Folder List in an open OE.

Its hard switching between Vista Mail and OE. I have two machines side by
side so I can jump between them.

Me too, but that doesn't keep me from getting confused. Maybe it ensures
it.

Now, if someone can figure out how to fix the same issue is VISTA!

Can you go to the Deleted Items folder in Windows Explorer and see if it's
empty except for winmail.fol?

I now have two of these undelete-able messages. Windows Vista is acursed --
nothing but trouble -- avoid it at all costs. All costs being the operable
words in my case so far. :(

I found that if I highlight them all (except the first one) and drag them
into my junk mail folder I can empty the junk mail folder. Then, I delete the
last one. It has been working that way for me so far. I just hope they get a
FIX for it soon!

I have been reading through all these posts trying to find a solution but
have been unsuccessful. I just found that if you hightlight the deleted
items, right click on empty it will do it on each individual message. It was
time consuming but it did work and I didn't select the actual message - just
the deleted items in the menu.

Hope this works for anyone else having this issue.
