Janice

Hi,
My boyfriend accidentally deleted a folder off my desktop (it wasnt a
shortcut) as well as the recycle bin.
Any ideas on how I can recover this deleted folder. I really need it
back...and if anyone has actually used those undelete softwares...can
you let me know if they work?

Thanks,
Janice

Yes, they work, but.... (read below)

"Deleting" a file doesn't actually delete it; it just marks the space as
available to be used. There are third-party programs that can sometimes
recover deleted files. The problem is that the space used by the file is
likely to become overwritten very quickly, and this makes the file
unrecoverable.

So your chances of successfully recovering this file are decent if you try
recovering it immediately after deleting it, and rapidly go downhill from
there. If you've been using the computer since then (for example to write
this question and read this answer), your chances are probably very poor by
now.

But if the file is important enough, it's worth a try anyway. Stop using the
computer in question immediately, if you haven't done so already. Download
an undelete program (here's one:
http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html but there are several others
to choose from; do a Google search) on a friend's computer and bring it to
yours on a floppy to try.

If this fails, your only other recourse is to take the drive to a
professional file recovery company. This kind of service is very expensive
and may or may not work in your case.

Hi

Which folder is it? System Restore doesn't monitor data files.

Hi Janice

They are the kind of files that System Restore doesn't monitor. Those files
may have gone, but you could try the two 'undelete' programs I referenced
earlier.

At this point it is unlikely that data recovery software will recover the
files, but you can try. I use Easy Recovery Pro, but that is expensive.
Here are a few other links to programs people whom I respect have
recommended:

http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html
PCInspector File Recovery -
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/welcome.htm
Executive Software “Undelete†-
http://www.execsoft.com/undelete/undelete.asp
R-Studio - http://www.r-tt.com/

Ontrack's EasyRecovery - http://www.ontrack.com/software/

I believe that Easy Recovery will allow you to download a trial and see if
it would recover your files before purchase. Otherwise you can contact a
professional data recovery company and see what they say. I prefer Drive
Savers, but there are others. Professional data recovery costs usually
start at $500USD and go up from there. Only you can determine the value of
the data.

DriveSavers - http://www.drivesavers.com
Seagate Data Recovery Services - https://www.seagatedatarecovery.com/

It's definitely "close the barn doors after the horse has escaped" but make
and implement a backup strategy for the future. Post back if you need help
with doing that.

No, System Restore only restores the system and does noting for your data
files. It's not a substitute for a backup program.

If the files have been deleted for three weeks, it's highly unlikely that an
undelete program will work. On the other hand there's no downside to trying,
and if I were in your shoes I'd try one. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Hi Janice:

Just an outside chance that the file has a copy on your machine somewhere?
Or perhaps a previous "draft" version that you could re-edit? Try a Search
on the file name and, if that fails, try a text search (takes much longer) on
a piece of text that is unique to that file.

good luck.
