There's a slight chance that doing a System
Restore would restore the file to your desktop.

And...maybe...just maybe...you could recover
the files with the following free software:

Recuva - File Recovery

Recuva Beginner's Guide

Good luck...

Listed below are a couple of very, very good FREE Programs for Recovery.

Read their reviews, and make your choice with which one you are happy
working with.

1. Stop using that computer; as you will overwrite the lost files, which are
not lost, until they are overwritten..

2. Preferably Slave your Hard Drive in another computer, install one of the
Recovery Programs in that computer, and read your Drive from there.

3. Or put your Hard Drive in a USB External Hard Drive Enclosure, attach it
to another computer, and do the same as in 2.

4. You can install the software and run it in your computer, but that risk
of overwriting the “deleted†files is still there.

Yes...that would be best. Any activity on the
drive the files were deleted from decreases
your chances of recovering them.

Recuva Quick Start may be useful:

And...the Recuva Beginner's Guide may be
worth a read..

If you know how to, it's best to run them from boot disks so that the
drive doesn't get used any more than absolutely necessary. If it's on a
drive other than where XP is, then it wouldn't matter so much. The
thing to remember is that every disk write to the drive with that file
on it increases the chances part or all of it may be over-written.

Any recovery program shoujld explain that in its documentation. Just be
sure to read it. And quit using the drive the file is on completely if
you can, until you can do the recovery attempt.

Do NOTHING that will write to your computer's hard drive, including system
restore.

Your very best hope is to remove the drive, slave it in another computer,
and try various un-delete programs.
