Deleted Files - Where do they go?

I'm wondering where deleted files go when I have a
specific folder mapped as a specific drive on everyone's
computer in the office to save and grab useful documents
and files that we use alot. Well, a couple of times
people have accidentally deleted files that others need.
My question is where do those files go? I can't seem to
find them on the computer with the shared drive, and the
people that deleted them can't seem to find them on their
computer either.

Thanks-

deleting files off of anything but a local drive means the
file is gone forever.

Thank you! That's what I thought, but what do I know...
I'm just the IT for the company! They hire me to second
guess everything that there is to second guess.

Just a note to add to this....the files are NOT gone forever, though they are inaccessible, unless you want to pay $1000's to have the data recovered. When a file is deleted, the name changes from originalfilename.doc to ?rginalfilename.doc, this causes it to be set to 0KB and hidden.

Actually with a program called Recover4Allpro I have been
able to recover accidently deleted files.
