Delete in IMAP not quite right

Vista Home Premium and Windows Mail on an IMAP account. When I delete a
message I like it to remain with a line through it in the message list until
I purge the mailbox. I have the "Use Deleted Items folder with IMAP accounts
option UNselected, but messages still disappear immediately when deleted. Am
I using that setting incorrectly, or can anyone tell me how to get the
preferred behaviour please.
