"Delete Block? No (Yes)"

In the past three days I've begun receiving the following message when
attempting to use the Delete key to delete more than one selected character.
"Delete Block? No (Yes)" In order to proceed with the deletion, I have to
press Y to confirm.
What causes the "Delete Block? No (Yes)" message in Word 2002? How do I turn
this feature off?
