delete a text page when opening word

When I open Word 2003 an old document appears. I have tried to delete it
with no success. This document appears every time I open Word.
I have tried to delete this page by highlighting and pressing delete then
save the change with no success.
I have tried to delete by going to 'my documents' but it does not appear in
the list.
Any suggestions?
