defragmenting

I"m having problems trying to completing defragmenting.
It goes through analizing followed by defragment for about 4 minutes. Then
both the before and after usage spaces fill up and look exactly alike. the
moving files progress bar shows 1% completed nd won't go further.
I've done the following: Defragment in safe mode-disabled Norton anti
virus-made sure that no program was running. I have 34% space available on
my hard drive, but I still get the same results. Is there anything else I
can do? I also reinstalled windows XP. thank you for your help. Ed

I don't know how long you're letting it run, but make sure you let it
run for a while at least an hour or two as Defrag will often sit on the
1% mark for quite a while "compacting" the files before moving on. I
think it's actually doing more work, but the progress screen info is
just not being updated. You may notice later that it will jump in spurts
as it completes rather than moving smoothly up the scale.

I have Norton Antivirus 2003 and Defrag completes here just fine without
using safe mode or disabling NAV. Try turning off the screensaver if
it's not one of Windows' built-in savers, and then run Defrag just
before you go to bed. Turn off the monitor, and check it again in the
morning. Once it has done it's first full defrag, the next runs should
be much faster.

If it still fails to complete after running overnight, you have an issue
with your system, perhaps hardware incompatibilities.

if you have kazzaa, get a program called DisKeeper... best
defrag utility in the market. takes only 5-10 mins to
defrag plus you can set schedualed automatic defragments.

Your poor advice is also a "joke".
