Defragmenter no longer works.

The defrag function on my PC no longer works. I tried using the defrag
function that came with the PC. (C => Properties => Tools =>
Defragmentation) It gets stuck fairly early on. Alt/Ctrl/Del shows that it
is not responding. I also tried Norton's defragment function but that won't
even begin.

I would appreciate advice on how to get defrag to work. Or, advice on some
other defrag utilities I can buy or download.

(My PC is Fry's FM7550 3GHz P4HT Media Center Edition, 1 GB memory, 200 GB
disk, CD/DVD player, CD/DVD writer, TV tuner, etc.)

Make sure there are no programs running in the background. Alot of times,
scanners have software that run in the background that need to be disabled.
Also, make sure screen savers are turned off and any powersaving options are
disabled. You can also try to defrag in safe mode and see if it works from
there. Make sure you are offline, your virus scanner is disabled (don't
forget to turn back on) and temporary disable your firewall software
(absolutely turn back on after, don't forget) HTH
