Defragmenter no longer works

G

Guest

My Disk Defragmenter no longer works, a possible casualty of Diskeeper. Nor,
for that matter, does Norton's Speed Disk. Disk Defragmenter says "Disk
Defragmenter could not start" and Speed Disk says "Speed Disk is unable to
access Drive C. Please check to see if another application has the drive
locked."

I've looked at many of the postings on this site, and one of best responses
I have seen is AndreasRoom.com. I made the changes in the command prompts as
suggested, but still no luck. (I was not able to find the windows\inf folder
as suggested--any suggestions?)

I also changed the setting to System Managed Size under Virtual Memory in
the Control Panel as suggested by another writer, but still no luck.

What's left to do? I'd love to hear from some of you smart people on this
issue. My computer badly needs to be defragmented.

Thanks!

Ed,

defrag.exe has to run from a command prompt.

dfrg.msc is the file that has all the pretty colors.

What happens if you open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
Type defrag /? in the command prompt and hit Enter?
Do you get the Usage info? Or an error message? If an error message,
what's the message?

What happens if you...
Start | Run | Type: dfrg.msc | Click OK
Does Disk Defragmenter open? Or do you get an error message? If an error
message, what's the message? If Disk Defragmenter opens what happens if you
click Analyze? Or if you click Defragment?

Marv:

Very good question, but I don't know how to answer it because I can't find
the program(s) anywhere and even if I could I wouldn't know how to determine
if they have the C drive locked.

It occurred to me that perhaps Diskeeper deleted some or all of Disk
Defragmenter. I've looked on the Microsoft website for possible downloads
and/or upgrades for Defragmenter but found nothing.

Where would you suggest that I go from here? Sorry to be such a bother.

Ed,
No Problem...

You might try this if you haven't already.Try to re-register the Defrag files:
First open up a Command Prompt, this can be found at:
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

Change into your windows\system32 directory. Your windows directory will be
either windows or winnt. Type:
cd \windows\system32

Register the defrag components, by typing:
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll

If it works, you're good to go. If it doesn't work try what Wesley suggested
now.

Using Windows Explorer browse to your windows\inf folder.
In there you will find a file called dfrg.inf right click this file, and
select Install.

Hope this helps!

Wesley:

OK, here is the best I can do with your last set of instructions and
suggestions.

1. When I enter defrag C: I get the usual response--Disk Defragmenter could
not start....

2. The scannow sfc was a washout. I kept getting messages that said
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the
DLL cashe. Insert XP CD now." Unfortunately, I could not find my XP CD
after two hours of searching. It's been a while....

3. The Event Viewer showed quite a few errors under Applications and
Systems, none under the other category.

4. I went to the website with Registry Mechanic, downloaded it, and ran the
trial version, which turned up something like 689 errors in the registry.
Fixing them all required a purchase. Do you recommend such a purchase? It
sells for $29.99, not bad if it works.

5. Finally, I ran the two regsvr32 files and both succeeded.

I'm open to further directions from you or any other computer pro such as
yourself.

Now to bed. I'll check back tomorrow. Thanks for all your help.

My Disk Defragmenter no longer works, a possible casualty of
Diskeeper. Nor, for that matter, does Norton's Speed Disk. Disk
Defragmenter says "Disk Defragmenter could not start" and Speed Disk
says "Speed Disk is unable to access Drive C. Please check to see
if another application has the drive locked."

I've looked at many of the postings on this site, and one of best
responses I have seen is AndreasRoom.com. I made the changes in the
command prompts as suggested, but still no luck. (I was not able to
find the windows\inf folder as suggested--any suggestions?)

I also changed the setting to System Managed Size under Virtual
Memory in the Control Panel as suggested by another writer, but
still no luck.

What's left to do? I'd love to hear from some of you smart people
on this issue. My computer badly needs to be defragmented.

Thanks!

Fellow user here. Tweaked any Services? Defrag requires Task Scheduler
Service, and (maybe) Disk Management Service running to work. Look in Control
Panel>Administrative Tools>Services to see if these services are Enabled and
Running.

There is a Logical Disk Manager service and a Logical Disk Manager
Administrative Service service, there is no Disk Management Service that I
am aware of in XP. The Task Scheduler service has nothing to do with defrag
unless you want to schedule a defrag. None of these are required to be
running in order for defrag to work.

I have the Logical Disk Manager service, the Logical Disk Manager
Administrative Service service and the Task Scheduler service all disabled
and defrag works fine on my machine.

I had similar trouble last year. In a file that I keep of the "surprises"
and fixes, this is what I wrote. Perhaps this may help:
+++++++++++++++++++++
Attempted to run the Windows defragmenter, found that it didn’t respond.
Had previously installed, then removed, a 3rd party defragger; it didn’t
restore the windows defragger. Here’s the fix found at
www.andreasroom.com/HowTo/WindowsDefrag.aspx

This is what it says:

a.. Go to command prompt, type cd \windows\system32.
b.. Then type each of these commands separately, press enter after each:
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll

a.. Go to windows\inf folder, right-click dfrg.inf, choose install.

Well, I ran Fefrag in Safe Made and it worked! While I was at it, I went
ahead and defragged my hard drive, which took most of the afternoon.

Defrag in Windows, though, still does not work.

As for uninstalling Speed Disk, I recently downloaded Norton SystemWorks and
Firewall and thus don't have a CD from which I could reload Speed Disk after
uninstalling it. But if Speed Disk is blocking Defrag, does it work the
other way too?

Systems, none under the other category.

4. I went to the website with Registry Mechanic, downloaded it, and ran
the trial version, which turned up something like 689 errors in the
registry. Fixing them all required a purchase. Do you recommend such a
purchase? It sells for $29.99, not bad if it works.

5. Finally, I ran the two regsvr32 files and both succeeded.

run it in Safe Mode. <shrug> At least it works. ;-)

Thank you!
After re-reading the facts, it appears Task Scheduler only affects the
Prefetcher's normal/cyclic Defragmentation. [As you said.]
The "Description" of the *Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service* just
plain isn't clear: "Configures Hard Drives & Volumes. The service only runs
for configuration processes and then stops." If Defrag isn't
(re)configuring, then configuring as in what? Drive letter assignment?

Wesley Vogel said:
There is a Logical Disk Manager service and a Logical Disk Manager
Administrative Service service, there is no Disk Management Service that I
am aware of in XP. The Task Scheduler service has nothing to do with defrag
unless you want to schedule a defrag. None of these are required to be
running in order for defrag to work.

I have the Logical Disk Manager service, the Logical Disk Manager
Administrative Service service and the Task Scheduler service all disabled
and defrag works fine on my machine.
