A person may need both of these services if the partitions are formatted as
dynamic disks.

don't know, I don't have anything like that.

After re-reading the facts, it appears Task Scheduler only affects the
Prefetcher's normal/cyclic Defragmentation. [As you said.]
The "Description" of the *Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service*
just plain isn't clear: "Configures Hard Drives & Volumes. The service
only runs for configuration processes and then stops." If Defrag isn't
(re)configuring, then configuring as in what? Drive letter assignment?

Wesley Vogel said:
There is a Logical Disk Manager service and a Logical Disk Manager
Administrative Service service, there is no Disk Management Service that
I am aware of in XP. The Task Scheduler service has nothing to do with
defrag unless you want to schedule a defrag. None of these are required
to be running in order for defrag to work.

I have the Logical Disk Manager service, the Logical Disk Manager
Administrative Service service and the Task Scheduler service all
disabled and defrag works fine on my machine.

Fellow user here. Tweaked any Services? Defrag requires Task Scheduler

OK, here is the best I can do with your last set of instructions and
suggestions.

1. When I enter defrag C: I get the usual response--Disk Defragmenter
could not start....

2. The scannow sfc was a washout. I kept getting messages that said
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to
the DLL cashe. Insert XP CD now." Unfortunately, I could not find my
XP CD after two hours of searching. It's been a while....

3. The Event Viewer showed quite a few errors under Applications and
Systems, none under the other category.

4. I went to the website with Registry Mechanic, downloaded it, and
ran the trial version, which turned up something like 689 errors in the
registry. Fixing them all required a purchase. Do you recommend such a
purchase? It sells for $29.99, not bad if it works.

5. Finally, I ran the two regsvr32 files and both succeeded.

I'm open to further directions from you or any other computer pro such
as yourself.

Now to bed. I'll check back tomorrow. Thanks for all your help.

Ed,

What happens if you open a command prompt, type
defrag C:
and hit Enter?

Try running The System File Checker (sfc.exe).

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

This will take a while.

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Uninstall Norton's Speed Disk, reboot and try running defrag. If it

I found the problem by accident, what I found was that the Virtual Memery

After setting it back to System Managed Size and reboot the Defrag started

I don't know how it got set to No Paging or when but this worked for me.

Please do *not* reply to extremely old messages as you did here. It's
been a *long* time since Wesley has posted here, and he won't see your
reply.

I had the same problem that when I tried to run Defrag all I would get is
Disk Defragmentation Could Not Start.
I found the problem by accident, what I found was that the Virtual Memery
was set to No Paging.
After setting it back to System Managed Size and reboot the Defrag started
to work again.
I don't know how it got set to No Paging or when but this worked for me.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection
entries

More info..
scannow sfc (sfc.exe)
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

After running sfc, reregister dfrgui.dll and dfrgsnap.dll.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgui.dll | Click OK

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll | Click OK

Back to Wesley this time:

In response to defrag/? I get usage info, not an error message, e.g.,
volume, analyze only, force...., verbose output, etc.

In response to dfrg.msc, Defragmenter does open, as always, but when I
click on Analyze or Defragment, I get the usual response: "Disk
Defragmenter could not start."

What does this tell you?

:

Ed,

defrag.exe has to run from a command prompt.

dfrg.msc is the file that has all the pretty colors.

What happens if you open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
Type defrag /? in the command prompt and hit Enter?
Do you get the Usage info? Or an error message? If an error message,
what's the message?

What happens if you...
Start | Run | Type: dfrg.msc | Click OK
Does Disk Defragmenter open? Or do you get an error message? If an error
message, what's the message? If Disk Defragmenter opens what happens if
you click Analyze? Or if you click Defragment?

I downloaded and ran the file but to no avail. At least, I thought I
ran it; it opened and closed too fast to tell--but it's only 69K.

Thanks anyway. Any other ideas?

Thanks to Wesley, I was able to find the hidden folder and install
dfrg.inf.

But Disk Defragmenter still does not work.....

I'm about ready to throw my computer out the door, but not yet.....

Any other suggestions?

:

\WINDOWS\inf is a Hidden folder.

Paste the following in Start | Run and click OK...

%windir%\inf

Right click dfrg.inf and select Install

In egleaves <[email protected]> hunted and pecked:
My Disk Defragmenter no longer works, a possible casualty of
Diskeeper. Nor, for that matter, does Norton's Speed Disk. Disk
Defragmenter says "Disk Defragmenter could not start" and Speed Disk
says "Speed Disk is unable to access Drive C. Please check to see
if another application has the drive locked."

I've looked at many of the postings on this site, and one of best
responses I have seen is AndreasRoom.com. I made the changes in the
command prompts as suggested, but still no luck. (I was not able to
find the windows\inf folder as suggested--any suggestions?)

I also changed the setting to System Managed Size under Virtual
Memory in the Control Panel as suggested by another writer, but
still no luck.

What's left to do? I'd love to hear from some of you smart people
on this issue. My computer badly needs to be defragmented.

Thanks!
