I am running Windows XP SP2 and am trying to defrag my harddrive. It starts
up to analyze & then I get this message: "The connection to the defragmenter
engine has been lost. Restart defragmentation." I have disabled anything
running in the background and still will not defrag. Can anyone help?

Try running CHKDSK to see if there are hard drive inconsistencies that need
to be repaired. Go to Start->Run and type CMD then press Enter or click OK.
that will bring up a command window. Type the following and press Enter.
CHKDSK /F /R

Accept any recommendations to have the process run at the next restart of
the computer. Restart the computer. Let CHKDSK do it's thing as it scans for
and attempt to repair problems. When finished it will boot into Windows. Try
defrag again. If the same problem occurs then try running Defrag from Safe
Mode. Restart the computer and keep pressing the F8 key until you see the
Boot Menu. Select Safe Mode.

I have a similar problem. When I try to defrag my harddrive running Windows
XP Home edition. I get the following message:

"The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmcbase.DLL is not a valid
Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

What can I do to fix this?
