Defragment

G

Guest

When I run Disk Defragmenter it stops at between 30-50% and tells me some
files can't be defragmented. When I print out the report, it does not show
what files are still fragmented. Any suggestions to help fix this?

U

Unknown

It doesn't show what files are fragmented because it hasn't finished
defragging.
Try running defrag from safe mode. If you have scanning virus programs
running shut them down and try defrag.

Certain files are never listed although you will get the not
defragmented message. The MFT ( Master File Table ) and the pagefile are
examples.

In general terms a minimum of 15% free disk space for the MS Disk
Defragmenter to work effectively and 20 to 25% is desirable. You can buy
third party defragmenters that require negligible free disk space to
operate but most require a similar amount to the MS Disk Defragmenter.

Before running the MS Disk Defragmenter it is desirable to run Disk
CleanUp (or a third party utility cCleaner) to empty the Recycle Bin and
remove Temporary Files etc. If you use Outlook Express you should
compact before running Disk CleanUp. Whether you use Disk CleanUp or
cCleaner you also should remove all but the latest System Restore
point -the More Options tab in Disk CleanUp. If you did not do these
tasks before running the MS Disk Defragmenter then this will partly
explain the poor result you achieved.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore
on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb.
Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System
Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time
find the slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit.
When you get to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

If you would like comments on your current fragmentation open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a
copy.

I find it difficult to understand why you have not succeeded using
Microsoft Disk Defragmenter to defragment the drive.

Run Disk CleanUp to empty the Recycle Bin and remove Temporary Files
etc. Then run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode. You should not need
Perfect Disk, which you will have to pay for after the expiration of the
trial period.

If Disk Defragmenter fails to complete then run chkdsk. Select Start,
Run, type "Chkdsk /f /r" wihout the quotes and click on OK. You will be
asked if you want chkdsk to run on the next boot. Click on Y(Yes) and
exit. Restart your computer. After chkdsk has completed try running Disk
Defragmenter again in safe mode.

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for the suggestions but it didn't work.

shumogy

:

Certain files are never listed although you will get the not
defragmented message. The MFT ( Master File Table ) and the
pagefile are examples.

In general terms a minimum of 15% free disk space for the MS Disk
Defragmenter to work effectively and 20 to 25% is desirable. You
can buy third party defragmenters that require negligible free
disk space to operate but most require a similar amount to the MS
Disk Defragmenter.

Before running the MS Disk Defragmenter it is desirable to run
Disk CleanUp (or a third party utility cCleaner) to empty the
Recycle Bin and remove Temporary Files etc. If you use Outlook
Express you should compact before running Disk CleanUp. Whether
you use Disk CleanUp or cCleaner you also should remove all but
the latest System Restore
point -the More Options tab in Disk CleanUp. If you did not do
these tasks before running the MS Disk Defragmenter then this will
partly explain the poor result you achieved.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System
Restore on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce
it to 700 mb. Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and
select System Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select
Settings but this time find the slider and drag it to the left
until it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get to the Settings
screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

If you would like comments on your current fragmentation open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click
on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy.

I do not understand what you are concerned about. The disk is not
fragmented. You even have a contiguous pagefile. Your pagefile does seem
small for a Windows XP setup! How much RAM memory do you have?

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for the suggestions but it didn't work.

shumogy

Certain files are never listed although you will get the not
defragmented message. The MFT ( Master File Table ) and the
pagefile are examples.

In general terms a minimum of 15% free disk space for the MS
Disk Defragmenter to work effectively and 20 to 25% is
desirable. You can buy third party defragmenters that require
negligible free disk space to operate but most require a
similar amount to the MS Disk Defragmenter.

Before running the MS Disk Defragmenter it is desirable to run
Disk CleanUp (or a third party utility cCleaner) to empty the
Recycle Bin and remove Temporary Files etc. If you use Outlook
Express you should compact before running Disk CleanUp.
Whether you use Disk CleanUp or cCleaner you also should
remove all but the latest System Restore
point -the More Options tab in Disk CleanUp. If you did not do
these tasks before running the MS Disk Defragmenter then this
will partly explain the poor result you achieved.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System
Restore on your C partition which is over generous. I would
reduce it to 700 mb. Right click your My Computer icon on the
Desktop and select System Restore. Place the cursor on your C
drive select Settings but this time find the slider and drag
it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get
to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

If you would like comments on your current fragmentation open
Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report
and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My
Documents Folder and post a copy.

Hi Gerry,

That's where I got the info. This is an HP WinXP Home Edition with service
pack 2. It has a 2.8 GHz hard drive with 248 MB of RAM. It's running
mostly OK. I realize more RAM would help but I'm not in a position to buy
any more simms just yet. I just don't understand why I keep getting the
"some files could not be degragmented" thing. It's better by far than it was.

Run Disk CleanUp to empty the Recycle Bin and remove Temporary

not need Perfect Disk, which you will have to pay for after the
expiration of the trial period.

If Disk Defragmenter fails to complete then run chkdsk. Select
Start, Run, type "Chkdsk /f /r" wihout the quotes and click on OK.
You will be asked if you want chkdsk to run on the next boot.
Click on Y(Yes) and exit. Restart your computer. After chkdsk has
completed try running Disk Defragmenter again in safe mode.

Except: Eliminate the /f from the command.
The /r includes the /f. You can sometimes get strange results
with both flags used at the same time. ChkDsk /? at a command
prompt will reveal the possible commands and explains that /r
includes /f.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System

reduce it to 700 mb.

Documents Folder and post a copy.

You can sometimes get strange results

includes /f.

Certain files are never listed although you will get the not

In general terms a minimum of 15% free disk space for the MS

negligible free disk space to operate but most require a

Utilities have been known to misreport just as politicians have been
known to plague us with spin.

Disk Defragmenter often says there is no need to Defragment. That can be
a totally misleading statement. It is based on an overall statistical
assessment of files within the volume. However, if 95 % of files, which
are never accessed, are not fragmented and all the remaining files are
being regularly accessed and are fragmented I somehow think you need to
defragment. t's the files you acces which are important. The advice that
there is no need to Defragment is intended to be helpful but it is
frequently misleading.

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for the suggestions but it didn't work.

Certain files are never listed although you will get the not
defragmented message. The MFT ( Master File Table ) and the
pagefile are examples.

In general terms a minimum of 15% free disk space for the MS
Disk Defragmenter to work effectively and 20 to 25% is
desirable. You can buy third party defragmenters that
require
negligible free disk space to operate but most require a
similar amount to the MS Disk Defragmenter.

Before running the MS Disk Defragmenter it is desirable to
run
Disk CleanUp (or a third party utility cCleaner) to empty
the
Recycle Bin and remove Temporary Files etc. If you use
Outlook
Express you should compact before running Disk CleanUp.
Whether you use Disk CleanUp or cCleaner you also should
remove all but the latest System Restore
point -the More Options tab in Disk CleanUp. If you did not
do
these tasks before running the MS Disk Defragmenter then
this
will partly explain the poor result you achieved.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to
System
Restore on your C partition which is over generous. I would
reduce it to 700 mb. Right click your My Computer icon on
the

With all due respect, that looks like the scan DID complete. Since there
is nothing to defragment (disk is not fragmented), it likely just jumped
from 35 to 100% real quick and gave the results. There is nothing for the
defragment program to do once it finished analyzing the disk or maybe it
moved a few k of files and was done.

If you are not getting a specific error message, then that's what's going
on. If you ARE getting an error message, post its exact contents here for
analysis.

Other than your Page File being a little on the small side, about half what
is probably best for such a small drive, I see zero problems. The only
impact of the small pagefile would be a little slower operating times as
long as it in turn is not throwing up any error messages. No error
messages, no literal problems. Be happy.

I find it difficult to understand why you have not succeeded using
Microsoft Disk Defragmenter to defragment the drive.

Run Disk CleanUp to empty the Recycle Bin and remove Temporary Files

Perfect Disk, which you will have to pay for after the expiration of
the trial period.

If Disk Defragmenter fails to complete then run chkdsk. Select
Start, Run, type "Chkdsk /f /r" wihout the quotes and click on OK.
You will be asked if you want chkdsk to run on the next boot. Click
on Y(Yes) and exit. Restart your computer. After chkdsk has
completed try running Disk Defragmenter again in safe mode.

Except: Eliminate the /f from the command.
The /r includes the /f. You can sometimes get strange results
with both flags used at the same time. ChkDsk /? at a command
prompt will reveal the possible commands and explains that /r
includes /f.

Top posted because the underlying response was top-posted.

Utilities have been known to misreport just as politicians have been
known to plague us with spin.

Except that's not a case of misreporting. Certain files must NOT be moved
on the disk; not even with defragmenters except in special cirucumstances.
Also, any file in use can not be defragged.
That is normal and exists in ALL windows versions since at least 98. It
would be a huge problem if defraggers DID defrag certain files, especially
any that were in use. That's the reason Defrag is most effective in Safe
Mode.
Disk Defragmenter often says there is no need to Defragment. That can
be a totally misleading statement. It is based on an overall
statistical assessment of files within the volume. However, if 95

Again, that's erroneous and a common misunderstanding. It's a long story so
I'll leave the research to you, but basically the way defrag works in that
analysis of whether to defrag or not, is to make an assumption about whether
the type of fragmentsion present on the drive will result in slower total
access times. If not, then it is not necessary to defrag.
The fact that a file isn't contiguous does not mean it'll slow down
access times, especially if all the parts are on the same track or adjacent
tracks. The drive heads have to read that whole track anyway, so whether it
picks up one or a hundred pieces of the file, the time taken was the same.
It's when the message says you DO need to format that there is
fragmentation that is likely slowing things down, IFF you happen to be using
those portions of the disk. e.g. using the fragmented files. Should you
never happen to use the fragmented data, then you'll never even know it's
there from a User point of view. This is why you'l find some purists who
say that defrag is a waste of time; but they're just as wrong as the ones
who say to defrag daily.
Also there is nothing saying you can NOT defrag, even if it's not
necessary. You can run defrag whenever you want to and if there is anything
to defrag, it will, each time. If nothign, it'll analyze the disk and
depending on the application, tell you there's nothing to do, or jump to the
end of its routine and produce a report such as the OP posted earlier.

That's where I got the info. This is an HP WinXP Home Edition with

why I keep getting the "some files could not be degragmented"

Certain files are never listed although you will get the
not defragmented message. The MFT ( Master File Table )
and the pagefile are examples.

In general terms a minimum of 15% free disk space for the
MS Disk Defragmenter to work effectively and 20 to 25% is
desirable. You can buy third party defragmenters that
require negligible free disk space to operate but most
require a similar amount to the MS Disk Defragmenter.

Before running the MS Disk Defragmenter it is desirable
to run Disk CleanUp (or a third party utility cCleaner)

If you use Outlook Express you should compact before
running Disk CleanUp. Whether you use Disk CleanUp or
cCleaner you also should remove all but the latest System
Restore
point -the More Options tab in Disk CleanUp. If you did
not do these tasks before running the MS Disk
Defragmenter then this will partly explain the poor
result you achieved.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to
System Restore on your C partition which is over
generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb. Right click your
