Defragmenting

I have run the defragmentation and the message at the end comes up with
cannot defragment some files - then suggests to view report. The report shows
no files at all. Is this a potential problem or not?

The files that cant be defraged generally are in use @ the time.Usually these
consist of the page file, one can set C: to "no page file" restart pc,defrag
once
in xp,the file(s) get defraged, then reset to "let system manage" page
file,restart
pc.Its not a big problem, but not all gets defragged at the time,or ever.....

There are a number of files that cannot be defragged because they may be in
use at the time. Page file is one hiberfil.sys is another, although these
usually do show up in the report. Encrypted files are another one that one
defrag. I wouldn't class it as a potential problem. When i've used Xp's
defrag i've usually ignored the files it say's it cannot defragment.
Personally i've never found XP or Vista's defragmenter of much use. I much
prefer to use PerfectDisk (www.raxco.com) but this is not freeware, you have
to buy it. At least with perfectDisk you can do an offline defragmentation
(just as the pc is booting) which will defrag page file, hiberfil etc. You
must enable this option in PerfectDisk, however, before these files will be
defragged.

Not unless an error message accompanies it. Not all files can be
degragmented for a few different reasons. If they're not being listed,
don't worry about them. Try an Analyze and see what it recommends.

Yes, Ed the pagedefrag tool is another option, but it only defrags the
paging file not, as far as i know, the hiberfil.sys. But, having said that,
if you don't use hibernation and you disable this function then you don't
have to worry about the hiberfil.sys file because it will no longer exist.
Well unless you re-enable hibernation of course.
