Defragment

I used to use the Norton defragment tool but recently Norton won't even
load properly. I tried using the built in Windows defrag but even after
it's done it says I still need to defrag. Does anyone know of any free
defrag programs I can download somewhere?

XP has a defrag app built in.

Do you have more than 15% free space?

Defrag & Free Space

[[A volume must have at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and
adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file
fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only
partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete
unneeded files or move them to another disk. ]]

[[Although the defragmentation tools can partially defragment volumes that
have less than 15 percent free space, for best results delete unneeded files
or move them to another volume to increase the free space to at least 15
percent. You can also use the Disk Cleanup tool to delete unnecessary
files. For more information about Disk Cleanup, see Windows XP Professional
Help.]]

[[After you defragment a volume, you can view the defragmentation report to
see the results. The report includes a list of files that remain fragmented
(having two or more fragments). Some reasons that a file might remain
fragmented include:

• The volume lacks adequate contiguous free space to defragment all files.

Is not free but Raxco PerfectDisk 7 is the best defragger in market.
Trust me

There is SIMPLY NO need for Nortons defrag or Raxco defrag. Save your
hard earned money.

For people that have disk with huge amounts of freespace and rarely
install and upgrade large software packages like MS Office, I agree.

The closer your disk is to full, or the size of the files you
manipulate is anywhere near the amount of freespace you need to pay
attention to fragmentation.

Why not reinstall Norton?

I have tried to reinstall several times and it goes fine, but when I try to
open the program it never opens. On looking in the processes Norton is
using 99% and has to be end tasked. After fighting with this for weeks I
just wanted another free defrag program that actually does the job not like
the built in Windows defrag.

If your harddisk is small you can try to avoid a bit the fragmentation
creating a partition using 64K cluster size to store pagefile.sys
(superhidden file default in c:\) if you have a small, fast hdd this
could work to, better if additional hdd is scsi. In 64K cluster size
partition, offline defrag (with raxco perfectdisk) takes around 1
minute or less.

Slight correction. PerfectDisk requires only 5% freespace to do a
complete run. Yes, the other defrag tools require 15%.

Depending on which version of Norton you're using. I use
Norton Sys works 2003. The 2004 and 2005 and 2006 are
problematical for virus and defrag.

I have found that using Norton Sys works 2003 for hard drive
mgmt is excellent (it notifies you when you have issues, and
it notifies you when it's time to defrag.

But for defragging, I go to Microsoft's defrag, which is in
System Tools

Start > All Programs > Accessories> System Tools > Defrag.

Also note that you can defrag while running other programs.

That is, the built-in defrag routine in XP is excellent.

Good luck!

I am still happy with the Freeware Edition of O&O Defrag 2000 which you
find at the same place, i.e. <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?id=8>

The problem here is a incompatibility between norton defrag
and windows defrag. You need to scrap Norton defrag. Disable
LiveUpdate first. Then select change to systemworks in
uninstall and in dialog choose change and customize
utilities, the remove the check by speeddisk.
