Defragging didn't change defrag report

R

Roger K

I defragged my C drive (80GB with 27GB free). I used "defrag -v" from the
cmd prompt in Safe Mode, and the reported status on starting was Total
fragmentation 11%, File fragmentation 23%. The process took 5 hours+ .

Afterwards when I rechecked using "defrag -a" the report said that the
fragmentation was exactly the same.

I'll rerun the defrag tonight, but can anyone suggest the reason for no
change in frag level afterwards?

OS is Windows XP Home +SP2.

TIA

If you're real hung up about actual stats, the built in defrag program
pales compared to 3rd party ones you can buy; like Diskkeeper.

There are unmovable files that will hinder defrag also.

Most are content with just letting defrag do its thing via the GUI
interface and let it go at that.

Save the Report after running Disk Defragmenter as a word or txt file
and post a copy here if you still get an unsatisfactory result.

Hope this helps.

Try running it in Safe Mode to see if it works better. Or, try another third
party tool to get more defragmentation.

I support the suggestions of the preious psoters. get a good defragger, the
native windows defrag is near useless. The best one i know at present is
Perfect Diskv 8 [by Raxco]

Thanks everyone for the advice. I've downloaded a trial copy of Perfect
Disk 8. Sounds like a good idea so I'll give it try.
