Defragementer will not start

hello
When i attempt to start up the disc defragmenter I get a pop up window that states
"mmc.exe - Application error
"the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click ok to terminate the application.

Any idea what might be causing this or how to correct it?

You can go to run,type:mmc In the new window,add/remove snap-in,add
add defragmenter
First though i'd try,run,type:cmd In cmd type:Defrag C: Then press enter key
If all goes well,when its thru type:CHKDSK C: /
Agree to restart,then type:EXI
Restart computer.
