defrag

I ran a disk defrag on my harddrive and now I am multiple problems with XP
home edition.

One of the problems is that if one person is logged on to my computer then
they have to be logged off before another user can log on. It used to be
able to switch between users.

Another thing that I noticed is that the task manager no longer shows what
is system vs user for processes running.

I get "snap-in failed to initialize" errors when I try to go to computer
management.

It seems that the defrag screwed up some things in XP. Is there a program
or something out there that could correct it without having to install xp
from scratch?

It's best to do a cursory Chkdsk on the drive before running a Defrag.
If the Read-Only Chkdsk finds error(s), it will suggest a Chkdsk with
a Repair or Fix qualifier (/R /F).
Check your root folder of C: for any Found.000, 001 folders, these
are recovered data folders where an inconsistency on the drive has been
fixed. If none exist - try a Chkdsk from the Run box (Chkdsk C: or
Chkdsk C: /R - this one will prompt to run at the next boot, click Yes).

I find it hard to believe that running Disk Defragmenter caused any of
these problems.

To see the Users tab in Task Manager:
Computer needs to be a member of a workgroup or a standalone computer.
The Users tab is unavailable on computers that are members of a network
domain.
The Welcome screen must be turned on.
Logging on at the Welcome screen is not available on computers that are
members of a network domain.
Fast User Switching must be turned on.
Fast User Switching is available only when the Welcome screen is turned
on.
Fast User Switching is unavailable on computers that are members of a
network domain.

To turn the Welcome screen on & Fast User Switching on...
You must have a computer administrator account on a computer that is a
member of a workgroup or is a stand-alone computer to turn on or turn
off
the Use the Welcome screen feature.

1 Open User Accounts, click Start, point to Settings, click Control
Panel,
and then double click User Accounts.
1a Or you can click Start | Run | Type: control userpasswords | OK
2 Click Change the way users log on or off.
3 Select: Use the Welcome screen
4 Click Apply Options button.
5 Click Change the way users log on or off.
6 Select: Use Fast User Switching.
7 Click Apply Options button.
8 Close User Accounts.

To see any names in the User Name column Terminal Services needs to be
set
to automatic and running.

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Terminal Services |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Apply | Click the Start
button to start the service | OK | Close Services

yes, I had the AV scanner enabled. It was not until after I started having
problems did I find that the AV scanner was not supposed to be enabled. That
is what I get for not finding out more about defrag before running it.
