OT: defrag not needed anymore?

Over in another ng (alt.comp.hardware) there was a discussion on
defrag programs. The consensus was hard drive defragmentation is no
longer needed as today's HDs are so fast that defrag isn't going to
make any difference in your HD's performance.

Since XP includes a defrag utility, what are your opinions?

I think this was discussed briefly in here or another MS group not too long
ago. Personally I don't notice any difference in performance before and
after. I used to defrag every other week; now I'm down to once every six
months and I do it mainly for "cosmetic" reasons--the analysis results pane
in the Defrag program looks neater after defragging.

It isn't going to make any difference...
