Defrag problem

G

Guest

I have a secondard hard drive in my PC. It is 120GB in size and I am using
87GB (72.5% used) of it. It is formatted as NTFS and the cluster size is
4KB. Whenever I run defrag, you can see from the analysis that it would
benefit from being defragmented. Defrag starts, but about 5 seconds later it
is done. You look at the report and nothing changed. Why won't Windows
defrag the drive?

Run error checking on it, and then try again.. safe mode would be good for
this

Well, I think that your missing the objective of "defrag" . What you are
probably seeing as a problem is the space in-between the unfragmented files.
Then there are files that cannot be moved or relocated. But ultimately,
your defrag is in good shape if your friendly o.s. states so. There are
other defragmentation programs avail as well. They provide different
options, like defragging the empty space.... In addition to windows defrag,
I got one in systemmechanic and I use another that is freeware called O & O
Defrag 2000. I only need one, but the change in the colors and visual
styles between them break up the monotony......

after defrag I am told that 4.0GB\Prog. Files\Microsoft Anti Spyware\Errors \
cannot be drefragged. How do I correct or overcome this?

I've already run chkdsk, and it didn't find any errors. I can try Safe Mode,
but I'm not sure that will work. I'll try it later. The drive is a
secondary drive and it contains only data. Here is a report from defrag.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Those files are probably in use and cannot be defragged. Or they are too
large, i.e.
6.96 GB Backup.bkf

I have absolutely no idea what thos .bin files are.

You must have at least 15% free space to defrag properly.

Defrag & Free Space

[[A volume must have at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and
adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file
fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only
partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete
unneeded files or move them to another disk. ]]

I called Diskeeper and they said the version that comes with Windows isn't
"smart" enough to take advantage of the available free space. What I mean is
if defrag determines that not enough contiguous free space is available to
fully defrag a file it will skip it. So even though I have enough free space
available, not enough contiguous free space is available to assemble the
file. FYI
