defrag not removing red

G

Guest

I moved into new office with computers already in place. Running xp pro. I
have tried to defrag but defrag will not remove all the red lines that
indicate fragmented areas and go to blue like defrag usually does. It will
derag only about half the bar and leave half in red. Can anyone tell me why,
and can I fix this. The computer is working fine, but sometimes hangs up a
little.

What does the defrag report say?

The report includes a list of files that remain fragmented
(having two or more fragments).

Do you have at least 15% free space on the drive?

[[A volume must have at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and
adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file
fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only
partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete
unneeded files or move them to another disk. ]]

[[Although the defragmentation tools can partially defragment volumes that
have less than 15 percent free space, for best results delete unneeded files
or move them to another volume to increase the free space to at least 15
percent. You can also use the Disk Cleanup tool to delete unnecessary
files. For more information about Disk Cleanup, see Windows XP Professional

Hi Wesley
disk capacity 14.25 GB
Free space 2.8 GB
Free Space 19%
Defrag report showed some files could not be defraged are *.zip and *.exe
files of some programs already in use. I could delete these if my programs
will run OK. Also, largest file is: \undo\Back.cab. What is this and can I
delete it?

Thanks
Bob

I have had good success using Power Defragmenter
(http://www.excessive-software.tk/) before using the XP defrag program.
Power Defragmenter is a free GUI for the Contig program from
sysinternals.com. Contig is a command line /file/ defragmenter. By using
this combination, each fragmented file is individually defragmented. The
XP defragmenter than only has to worry about optimizing the file locations
on the hard drive.

Thanks for the tip, Mik!

I just downloaded both programs-- as well as the entire page
from excessive. (I'm an "excessive" kinda guy).

I'm running Power Defragger now.

I just LOVE to learn/ find new stuff!

Tip o the hat to ya!

Good luck!

Interesting suggestion.

I've read it before, and I've heard it several times, but
never got Defrag to run in Safe Mode.

That's merely my penny.

(Don't have 2 cents)

I too love finding new stuff, particularly ones that work well.

Enjoy,

mikkl

Yep. I discovered a neat little thing called "Reg Cleaner"
several years ago. I run it daily. Then I stumbled over
SpyBot, and LOVED it about a year ago. Found AdAware Pro,
and loved it. Found SpySweeper (the only thing I've bought
besides Windows XP Pro in awhile.

I was having driver problems, and stumbled upon Driver
Magic. Take that back about buying things! I bought Driver
Magic, and it ate my computer!

Then I found Driver Genius, and LOVE it! It gave me SEVERAL
new drivers, and it was free!

People who tell me they "simply don't download' are running
some piss-poor hardware/software.

There is just so much stuff out there to enhance your
computer!

Someone mentioned "Crap Cleaner" ("CCleaner") the other day.
Now I have that, and it is amazing!

I probably use 10 different things to clean maintain my
computer these days. (I like my system SQUEAKY clean).

And if it even begins to stutter-- mouse is erratic, a
keyboard error, that window won't open...

If it won't clean up in an hour or two, it's

Fdisk/format time!

Later!

Good luck!

One should always have at least 10 gig free on C: if running XP.

Puhlease, Plato, you should know better than that.

If you like Spysweeper, you will love Ewido. Since I have been using it,
SpyBot S&D and AdAware rarely find anything and I didn't renew SpySweeper.
