XP Disk Defragmenter Analyze Keeps Recommending to Defrag...?

Regardless of how many times I defrag my C: partition Analyze keeps
recommending the partition needs to be defragged again. The display looks
pretty clean with no red Fragmented file areas showing at all.

Also, my other three partitions, D:, E:, and F: don't have this Analyze
problem--one defrag does it for them. One of these is on the same physical
drive. The other two are on a second physical drive.

How can I fix Analyze to accept the defrag of C: and stop reporting the
error that it needs to be defragged again OR if the error to defrag is valid
how do I fix whatever is causing this?

KB article references are nice if one exists concerning this problem.

Thank you.

Have you run a read-only Chkdsk on the volume ? Perhaps you have
free space issues that are confusing Defrag. Doing the cursory Chkdsk
will let you know if the volume is marked "Dirty". If it is, then a Chkdsk
with a /F or /R qualifier is called for.

Interesting... Chkdsk run from cmd reported a problem and suggested to run
chkdks /f which did so after the scheduled reboot. It said it fixed
something too. But I then ran Analyze and defragged and Analyze is still
saying I need to defrag. So even though something was fixed it didn't fix
the initial problem.

This issue remains unresolved. I need more ideas on how to fix this or how
to force Disk Defragmenter to really finish defragging the C: partition and
not just finding a pointer somewhere that says it is done when it isn't done
or to get around whatever is messing it up?

I would suggest you download and try the 30-Day Fully functional
version of Raxco's Perfect Disk. The program is very effective and
does a much more comprehensive job of defragmenting drives than
the cursory defrag built into XP.
If you decide to try it, read the instructions as you need to do both
an Off-line and On-line defrag session.
The sign up for the trial version is found at:
