Defrag messed up a driver

I ran disk defragmenter on my C: drive. Afterwards, the computer will not
complete the boot process. In safe mode it gets as far as starting MUP.SYS
and then reboots. However, I don't know if MUP.SYS or an earlier driver is
the problem.

What is the best way to go about fixing this?
Is the Windows recovery console going to help, and how should I use it?

Many thanks,

Andrew

I believe the reference to MUP.SYS is a red herring; it just seems to
be the last item that is often listed when a failure of this type
occurs.

If you haven't yet tried "Last Known Good Configuration", you should.
Have a look here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852/

Or, if you don't have more than one OS installed, have a look here:

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000626.htm

You can Google on "last known good" if you need more help.

Before defragmenting remove your USB devices (if any) and then try to defrag.
If not works try with another program like "Diskeeper". Hope this helps.

Thanks all. Ghost could not even install to restore the image and Windows
would not do a new install so I swapped the hard drive, which fixed the
problem.

It is as though the hard drive went bad at same time I ran a defrag. Wierd.
