Total crash!!!

Woe is me at Xmas time! My XP Home has completely crashed. I can't get it
to boot at all. I am getting error codes - 0000007E, C0000005, 304A9A2A,
F72E36FC & F72E33F8.

In safe mode I still get the blue error page announcing the above errors.
The system boots for about 16secs. then the blue error page appears.

I have a suspicion that a network driver has gone awry! The safe mode
loading screen ends at Windows\System32\ Drivers\Mup.sys

I am dubious about which drivers to "play with" in Recovery Console. Any
ideas?

We're only days away from 2006. Maybe it's time you dumped that toy
operating system and starting using a real o/s? Take one of the Linux
distros for a test drive. You'll like it and it's free.

x-no-archive: yes

Sounds as if it actually is not booting at all, merely attempting to
boot.

Usually the old "blue screen" means it's not booting.

Grab your XP Home disk and boot from it.

When you get to the menu that asks if you want to repair or install,
select repair.

The option you want, after you have selected where your version of
windows is...

something like

1. C:\windows

or

1. F:\windows

and you type a " 1 "

You will get a console with a list of commands on it.

I believe the one you want is called

"BOOTFIX"

Do not type bootfix at this point.

ESC from this screen which puts you at the DOS prompt.

You are now in the SYSTEM.

BE CAREFUL!!!

NOW, type " Bootfix" or "Fixboot" (whichever it is)

without the quotes.

NOW, remove the CD from the CD Drive and hit your Reset button.

If you don't go into a normal boot,

Go through the reboot process with the CD again,

next time you get to the menu, select "Install Windows", but do not
select the install that causes you to format the hard drive.

If the system won't allow you to install without formatting your hard
drive,

you'll need to format first.

If you are going to have to format, I HIGHLY recommend that you delete
your partition (only takes a sec), and repartition.

FIRST.

THEN format, then install (one step).

In 5 - 10 minutes (it's FAST), you'll be back to your Desktop.

Good luck!

That means you aren't booting, sir!

NoStop! Maybe it's time _you_ dumped your toy brain and expend some of
your worthless efforts elsewhere. This is WinXP.gen, not some
linux.advocacy group. If people want to use Linux they are free to do so
(I have and do) and there are plenty of meaningful resources to offer
them advice and help out there, but you are wasting your "breath" here.
If you have something worthwhile to offer to someone asking for help
with WinXP then by all means do so, otherwise please STFU. It's getting
annoying.

Thanks Tallahasee. I will try what you have suggested. The only problem is,
I don't want to lose my hard drive info. which I will do if I reformat -
unless you know a way round it? The only other way I can think of is to fit
another hard drive as the primary and connect the existing hard drive as a
slave and boot from the new HD!

Hello again Talahasee. I have just noticed something - at the point where I
type "Bootfix" into the DOS screen, should I remove the CD before I hit enter
to action the DOS screen or after? I know I remove it before hitting Reset
but I wasn't sure about the above.
