defrag = less space as a result ?

I run monthly batch job to defrag my drives.(XP SP2 version of defrag -
not Diskeeper)
Today I happened to notice a log file showing:
=======
Windows Disk Defragmenter
Copyright (c) 2001 Microsoft Corp. and Executive Software International,
Inc.

Analysis Report
25.04 GB Total, 9.54 GB (38%) Free, 5% Fragmented (11% file
fragmentation)

Defragmentation Report
25.04 GB Total, 9.51 GB (37%) Free, 0% Fragmented (0% file
fragmentation)
========

Why would I end up with LESS space free than I had while fragmented ?
Not concerned - just curious.

You need to look somewhere else. Defragging only reassembles
the various pieces that make up your files. It has no effect on
the amount of free disk space. Maybe Windows created a new
System Restore point while you weren't looking.

Exactly why I'm asking.
so you'd agree that it's strange ..
Maybe Windows created a new
System Restore point while you weren't looking.
Restore points are turned off on all drives but C.
My d drive - for my data backups/mp3/pix etc.
And I was doing nothing on Pc. All apps closed.
In fact I went out for coffee.

It hadn't done that before
(I usually do check logfile to see how bad it was)

I'll check it again next time - maybe just a mathematical fluke.

I just did a test and got the same free disk space before and after.
However, I did gain two files -41,514 became 41,516.

If you ran Disk Defragmenter in normal mode ( also safe mode to a lesser
extent ) you can still get other processes creating files.

Hope this helps.
