Defrag Crashed System

My notebook was in the process of defragging when it crashed and locked up at
46% complete. Now system will not run at all, even from CD even though the
BIOS is set to boot from CD first. Windows splash screen will show for up to
5 minutes, then screen goes blank then the following error message show us
for approx 30 seconds: STOP: c0000139 Entry Point Not Found. The procedure
entry point I_RpcExceptionfilter could not be located int he dynamic link
library RPCRT4.dll. System then just keeps rebooting. Have tried to run Safe
Mode, Last known config, nothing works. Any suggestions short of reformatting
drive? Would I at least be able to pull drive out of notebook and hook up to
another machine to pull the files off? Thanks.

Bert,
Can't try using system restore as I have not been able to get to a command
prompt. Tried using a floppy boot disk as well; system starts up, I can press
F8 to get startup options, but none of them will loadl just keep getting the
same error message, though when attempting to do Safe Mode, the system lists
the different drivers and seems to hang at agp440.sys before showing the
other message and then restarts itself.

Hi Pretzel,

What version of WinXP are you running, and are there any Service Packs

Hi,

At this point I would suggest running the restore disk. This
will remove everything on the drive.

You mentioned earlier that the system was having trouble
booting to the CD. You want to make sure this is the correct
CD for that system and that the CD is clean and not damaged.

If you have data files that were not backed up and need to
be recovered, Bart's PE: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
will help.

I have a few more questions.

What were the circumstances of crash?
Power failure, power surge or...

Was it Windows Defrag running when the crash occurred?

You said you tried booting with a floppy, what type of floppy
set was it, Win98, XP?

Has the Restore disk worked in the past?

Answers:
1) No idea. I started the defrag & walked away. I checked on it once, it
was at 46%. Started work on a destop machine. It completed in about an hour.
Went back to check on the notebook, it was still at 46% (after 2 hours) and
had a "non responding" on the title bar. Tried to close, but whole machine
had locked up.
2) Was running Norton Speed Disk from Systemworks 2003
3) Gateway tech support had be create a Windows XP Home boot floppy, but it
didn't work. I also tried your suggestion of Bart PE, however the CD drive
won't boot anything. I've never had to restore anything previously on the
machine in two years, but it is readable and bootable on my desktop, and I
used files from it to create the boot floppy (my desktop has XP Pro).

Hi Pretzel,

If you can not access the floppy or CD-ROM i suspect you are
dead in the water.
The freeze while defraging could have very well been caused
by hardware failure.
I suggest calling Gateware support for instruction on how to
proceed.

Please post back on how you make out.
