I had a similar problem recently - fixed with a
suggestion from this newsgroup. Mine was a damaged file,
which I couldn't delete, move or rename. Run error
checking first.
Open My Computer. Right click your hard drive and select
Properties. On the Tools tab under error checking, click
Check Now. Under Check Disc options, tick both boxes.
You then have to reboot for error checking to run, but it
will repair damaged clusters and files. If it finds a
lot of damage (mine had 25 instances) it means the HDD is
failing. Good luck. Let me know how you go.

You may also want to use Ctrl+Alt+Del and check the task manager to see if anything is running in the background. I had this problem once and was told that anything running in the background - like stuff that may be on a timer- will stop the defrag and it will start over when that program concludes.
