Finally got it to work by manually extracting the engine and definitions from
the latest engine/definition update posted here. No guarantees that this will
work anywhere other than my machine though!

1) extract files from manually downloaded engine/definition post (should
contain AS_Full_Engine.ini, mpasbase.vdm, mpasdlta.vdm, mpengine.dll,
MPSigStub.exe);

2) quit Defender;

2) open task manager and end the 'mpengine' process;

3) open C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates\Default and move the files
there to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
Defender\Definition Updates\Backup ;

4) copy mpasbase.vdm, mpasdlta.vdm, mpengine.dll to C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition
Updates\Default;

5) launch Defender

6) end.

Hi Rainbow,

I believe the error you saw was temporary - we've seen other users recover
from it without extraordinary actions.
Here's the specific Windows Update error you're hitting:
// MessageId: WU_E_ALL_UPDATES_FAILED
//
// MessageText:
//
// Operation failed for all the updates.
Which is all pretty darn unhelpful message, huh? :)

Please try to get updates through WD, and then could you send me your
"windowsupdate.log" from c:\windows\?

Also, standard definition update debugging includes going to
windowsupdate.com and trying updates through there, that tends to fix a lot
of problems.

Thanks for using Windows Defender,
Joe
