Definition Updates

I have my computer 100% up to date, however Windows update is telling me that
I have a new update that has been downloaded and needs to be intalled:
Defintiion Update 1.14.1459.12 for Beta Windows Defender (KB915597). I have
installed this several times. and yet the alert keeps popping up? Is there a
fix for this, if it is not one that is easy or quick to do, I'm afraid I may
have to uninstall until it becomes more stable. Please help.

Any clues in the System events log you can see?

In windowsupdate.log scroll to the very end of this log file, and then
work back to the beginning of that last update attempt.

Cut and paste just that tail end of the log file to a response in this
thread.

Let's see if we can tell what is hªppening.

For the benefit of the community reading this post, please rate the pºsts.

Hi Engel,

I've been having the same problem. Below is some info from my
windowsupdate.log file. I'd like to attach this as a file, but the web viewer
doesn't have a way to do that. The curious part is the log mentions something
about a Saturday May 27 install.

It is a home machine used on my private network. The OS is XP-SP2 Pro running

I'm in the same boat. I have "successfully" updated this definition file 12
times since 5/18/06. Windows Defender continues to warn me that the updates
are (now) 14 days old.

In general, if that KB (918355) procedure fails with an error message, the
next thing to try is the Windows Installer cleanup tool:

Right, the MSI cleanup utility sometimes has some side effects and should be
used as a last resort.

Engel - I would strongly recommend not using the Windows Installer cleanup
tool unless it is the only route left--We need to avoid that tool for the
time being. It causes further update difficulties for Office, and there is
presently an unpatched vulnerability in Word which is being exploited
(although not widely) in the wild, and which needs to get patched.

Hi Bill and Engel,

I went back to Microsoft Update and tried again. The first thing the site
did was re-install the Genuine Advantage Tool. After the install, the
troublesome update was gone. Next, I opened Windows Defender. The engine
version is 1.1.1440.0 and the Definition Version is 1.14.1463.7. I'm not sure
what was wrong with the previous definition version, but the auto update has
fixed Defender for now. I appreciate the effort you have put in to solve this
problem. Thanks. By the way, I am running Onecare. It was reporting the
missing update but it now reporting Defender as current. 8)

Excellent. There's apparently some magic in the current definitions that is
fixing things. I suspect that the WGA piece is just happenstance--not
related to the improvement.

on the "other end", in some fashion.
