What's the cheapest way to isolate my own apartment from the wireless
LAN radiation of my neighborhood?

Our of curiosity: In USA, could you sue your neighborhood for this?

You could create a Faraday cage using the metal wire mesh material commonly
used for screen doors. A fine mesh of a size suitable for keeping out bugs
will work. This cage would need to completely enclose you in order to block
out all electromagnet radiation. If there are gaps then some lesser amounts
of EM will get through. If you do have gaps then run a conductor so that you
will have electrical continuity throughout all parts of the cage. This
conductor can be light gauge as the current involved is minute. Note that
you will not be able to receive or send any signals from inside this cage.
As an example of this your cell phone would not work. Computers are also
sensitive to EM. Some manufactures of PC cases list EM protection values in
their specs. Non metalic cases are unable to keep out EM.

I share your concerns but to a lesser degree. I too have wondered about the
effects of EM, not from local sources but from satellites. If anyone on
earth can receive signals then what am I being exposed too? Possibly the
worst place to live is under a power line tower. People have suffered tumors
and mental disorders that were proven to be caused by close proximity to
such powerful sources of EM. Imagine putting your head in a microwave oven
at low power for 24 hours a day. Not a happy thought.

Wrap your body in aluminum foil and then connect to a common ground.
Don't forget the little propeller on the hat. ( very important for stirring
up the ions around you.)

No, not proven, neither by direct research nor by statistical inferrence.

A microwave oven uses full power at short cycles to provide "low power." As
such, your eyeballs would likely be destroyed in the first 15 second burst,
shortly thereafter along with whatever part(s) of brain you have left.

IIRC proven to a courts satisfaction. How about you staying in close
proximity to a strong source of EM and let us know how you fare? You are
correct about the intermittent microwave power. It was just a metaphor.
Happy now?

You cannot, except by moving elsewhere.
Then there's cellphone towers, multi-megawatt TV and
radio stations, aircraft and other mobile communications,
ships' radars if you live near a harbour, and of course the
constant background RF radiation from the universe.
Compared to all these, home PC WiFi radiation is insignificant.

But more annoying if you're wanting to just stick to your own WiFi
connection ... and also not have anybody roaming around using it.

My brother put in his own ... And neighbors swamped his system. He
doesn't want to use theirs; nor does he want them using his. His, of
course, he can keep others out of by using various tools. Theirs ....

So turn of the SSID and turn on WPA-PSK. That will keep the majority of
casual users out.

Solar radiation is probably 1000 times (maybe more) of a concern than any
man-made EM you may be exposed to. It is the only 'proven' danger to humans
as far as EM radiation is concerned with the possible exception of high
output ULF/VLF antenna fields operated by the military in very remote areas
and you would have to be within the grid to even be in danger from those.

You cut this from my previous post: "IIRC proven to a courts satisfaction.

Suspect you do not believe in global warming either.

Faraday cage performance is mentioned here.

http://www.kineticsystems.com/page.php/id/434

"Produced with high-density, 16-mesh copper screen, they provide
attenuation of up to 100 dB below 500 kHz, 60 dB below 50 MHz, and
20 dB below 5 GHz."

In this article, they mention that some plaster in older
homes, was laid on top of a 1" wire screening.

http://www.networkworld.com/columnists/2007/032907gearhead.html?fsrc=rss-wireless

"...our walls were built in the 1940s using plaster laid up on a 1-inch-square
wire mesh. The consequence of this construction is that every room is a Faraday
cage.

...we measured a loss of about 15 decibels from one side of the wall to the
other. This equates to a power loss of about 32%. By the time we got to the
living room, we had a 40-decibel loss, which equals a loss of about 99.99%!"

You can buy copper mesh here. For one of the products, a roll costs about $3 per
square foot and the 400 sq ft roll weighs 160 lb. You'll need a means to join the
meshes together (to cover an 8 foot high room), plus special care around doorways,
so that when the meshed door is closed, the door makes good contact with the frame.

Another alternative, is this paint, at about $80 per liter. Of course, if
someone wants to remove the paint later, that would make an awful mess.
