I have just upgraded to defender beta 2 and have noticed that I no longer
have any shortcut desktop icons either on my desktop or toolbars. Is this
normal?
I do know how to manually put on a shortcut!
On the plus side this new antispyware seems very quick and has lots of
information about programes that are installed.
Seems to work well and I would recommend it although I read that in future
it might incurr a charge!

right-cflick desktop -> Arrange Icons By -> tick Show Desktop Icons?

When was the last time you used your computer .. more than 60 days
ago?

Actually I DO know how to place icons on the desktop..the point I was making
was that after an upgrade to beta 2 the normal defender (beta 1) icons only
where missing!!
Bob

I take the point and had no intentions to upgrade until the defender beta 1
kept prompting to upgrade! Fingers crossed but no probs so far !!
Bob

Yes this is normal, you will experience problems with this product, most
issues should be resolved by the time the actual product comes out. Remember
that all BETA products are what they state (BETA). definition; work in
progress.

Sorry, but if you have a quick browse through some of the questions
that get asked in the newsgroup, you'll appreciate my style of
questioning :) :) :)

I had been running MS Antispyware for awhile when it auto downloaded updates
a couple of days ago. The auto update came down with Windows Defender Beta 2
and the other is gone now. No bull's-eye icon in the task bar any longer and
no issues thus far.

That is exactly what happened to me....I wouldn't normally have beta
software on my computer but because of the many good reports with the MS
Antispyware (BETA 1) I thought I would take a chance! I have since loaded
that edition onto many computers with no problems...so far !!!

Hi Bob
This is strange, because I still have beta 1.
I have read that others have had Defender shoved down their throats or have
downloaded it thinking it was beta 1 they were updating.
MS AS v. 1.0.701 - Definition v 5837 - updated 27 April 2006 - Expires 31
July 2006.
I waited for 6 months before I downloaded beta 1.
Will do the same with Defender.

That was also my intention but if you click update with MS Antispyware Beta1
you automatically get Defender beta 2. As I say no problems so far!!

Bob,
It was strange that the defaulted update went to WD beta 2. It was an auto
update like normally happens with Windows. I was a tad leery about it with
the few bad experiences some were having. Still good thus far.

Hi Bob
It just happened again - I just updated beta 1 - but I took particular
notice and a small window appeared first asking if I wanted to update to a
'newer version' - so I clicked 'no' and I was then asked if I wanted to
update beta 1.
Glad to hear Defender is OK for you at the moment - and may it continue to
be so.

Hi Ray
Do I read your post correctly - you have updates for MS stuff on
'AUTO'????????
I was advised to have it set on 'Notify' - recently that seems to have been
the general advice given - even by one or two MVPs.
Hope it stays good for you as well

Bob! Bob!! Bob!!! I think I have just re-interpretted your original
post!!!!!

When you said " .... and have noticed that I no longer
have any shortcut desktop icons either on my desktop or toolbars.", I
interpretted that as absolutely *NO* icons - of any sort, not just no
icons for the Defender/Spyware program.

Hence my response about unhidind (all) icons, and (all) unused icons
being cleaned off the Desktop after 60 days.

Yeh, me too, in that case. An icon only appear in the Systray when
something happens (good/OK or bad).

I'd go even further - turn it off altogether.

I set all the computers I'm involved with that way, and instill it in
the users/owners that it is *THEIR* responsibility (not Bill Gates) to
periodically - but frequently - manually run Windows update, and
*CONSIDER* the updates available before applying them.

Just as you wouldn't let someone else put any sort of petrol in your
car, don't let anyone else dump programs on your computer!

I also noticed my question wan't very well written so I do understand why
you interpreted it as you did.

Hello Antioch,
Yep, you read it correctly. I have always had my system set to auto update.
Maybe not the best thing to do, but it appears to be working for me. It
seems MS is always on the fix with things, hence the updates.
I have read the posts as well indicating that may not be the best approach.
I am not in tune enough to the inner workings of the software to understand
what damage updates could cause. As long as my system is running good,
really can't complain at this point.
Thanks,
Ray
