Windows Defender

Hi

What on earth is going on with Windows Defender?????

A few days ago, I went to the M$ download URL and after validating windows
(my copy is legally bought) I downloaded and installed Windows Defender a
couple of days and the install went ok and without problems. I thought no
more about it until I just turned on my computer and noticed the Windows
Update shield in the system tray and I started installation which was an
update for Defender, but the update failed with the following message:

Updates were unable to be successfully installed

The following updates were not installed:

Definition Update: 1.13.1276.3 for BETA Windows Defender (KB892519)

When I tried to update through "About Windows Defender/Check for Update",
Windows tried to acquire any new updates but after a minute or so, I go the
following systray message:

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update 0x8240022. Wrong diskette
is in the drive. Insert %2 (Volume Serial Number: %3) into the drive

What's with this 'volume serial number' and 'the wrong diskette is in the
drive'?

I know it's in BETA but I've already updated once when I first installed it,
so why can't I update now? Fast response needed and if the problem updating
continues, I will uninstall Defender and reinstall M$ Antispyware.

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave
I have only recently been made aware there was a Defender - no communication
from MS which I would have thought I might expect.
This evening, MS updated the MS Antispy beta and I still have 160 odd days
to go.
Mind you, I haven't had auto notification of security updates either - found
them after reading a post about everybody having difficulty downloading one
of 4/5 updates.
Now some are saying uninstall beta1 first - others say it will do it auto
when you download defender.
I suppose its a case of 'blind faith' again. Fingers crossed and download.
But I hesitate after reading your post.

It's still a beta version, and that's why you haven't gotten any
communication about it.

It's probably just a problem with the signatures going through AU -
they'll probably have the kinks worked out soon...
