DEFENDER

I have recently uninstalled defender for the third time because of updates .
For example, today, the latest update installed 8 times . Each time the
update is "successful" , but in a few minutes "OneCare " is again asking me
to download the latest updates , and the cycle begins again .

This has happened with previous updates as well

So, reluctantly I have uninstalled defender and will keep it uninstalled
until I know that this problem has been resolved because it can be a real
nuisance to be reminded to update every few minutes

I know that I've seen a post from a Microsoft staffer stating that they have
fixed a number of update bugs in recent time. However, I don't know what
work is needed before the results of those fixes are available to the rest
of us.

Windows Defender Live (Beta), help needed from Microsoft.
Except for the new download Signature Version 1.14.1314.1, all previous
versions have fallen into a loop to High Priority Definition Update
1.14.1314.1 for Beta Windows Defender (KB915597). The users of the Windows
OneCare Live (Beta) have downloaded automatically the file in excess of 54
times, as per the Update History, with no positive results. Previous results
of the Windows Defender (Beta) Definition Updates that worked are:
1.13.1276.3, 1.13.1272.4, 1.13.1276.16, 1.13.1282.6 and 1.13.1386.1 with KB
892519, 892519, 892519, 915597 and 915597 respectively. The loop failure
started when trying to update to 1.13.1288.5 and 1.13.1314.1 both with
KB915597, from older Signature Versions. Worst of all, no removal of the
Defender beta is possible nor installation of the newer 1314 version ontop of
the other.
Microsoft, please read also the many complains in the Discussion Groups Home

I am stuck on signature version 1.14.1288.5, auto updated 1314 but doesn't
install, even though it shows computer succesfully updated. Now there is 1315
and the same again, both auto update and going to download manually from
windows update site says the same thing, but am still stuck with the older
definitions, come on Microsoft, this needs sorting and soon. Checked with my
brother in law and he has the same problem as me too!

Mark:
I had the same terrible problem for a week and was solved with the new
Windows Live OneCare build 0.9.0944.26 Beta 2, just out today 3-10-2006. In
the future it will have the Defender integrated. I did the following on the
Defender version 1.13.1288
Click Start, click Run, type Msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}, and then click OK. See Article
9151105 dated 2-20-2006.
Then I removed the Beta 1 OneCare and installed todays new Beta 2. I
restarted and the new OneCare started running the tests. BIG SURPRISE. My
Defrnder automatically became version 1.14.1315.1. I am very happy now.

Excellent--glad you got that going, and thanks for helping others with this
post.

Unfortunately I don't have One Care as I have my own Int. Sec. suite
installed. I uninstalled Defender yesterday and reinstalled, it shows yellow,
needing to be updated but it won't update, Windows update tells me it is up
to date with latest engine file and definitions but it just sits there with
the orange alert icon on my system tray. I have finally uninstalled and will
leave this until Microsoft bring out a more reliable updated version. Shame
because it seemed to work for a while.

I don't have a clear picture of what was happening. If Windows Update
didn't offer anything new, what was the version in place according to the
main page of Windows Defender?

I tend to suspect this is a case of incompletely installed definitions,
except that you also say that the program was alarming about out of date
definitions--I'm not sure when that happens, but I believe it is weeks--not
just a few days.

What I mean is when Windows manage to iron out these bugs, I might give it a
go again.

When I reinstalled, the main screen with the yellow band at top states that
the definitions haven't been updated in I think it was 44 days? Windows
update says the opposite, that I have the latest definitions and engine!!

OK--that's clear, and I think I could suggest how to fix it, but you may be
right--waiting until some of the wrinkles are smoothed out may be best for
you.

You won't believe this but I have just fixed it! I had a feeling something
within the programme was missing, I have a prog. called Registry Mechanic,
decided maybe I had inadvertantly deleted something that I shouldn't and went
back to a back up file from 5 days ago, restored this and straight away my
Defender went green and also shows the latest Definitions installed. All the
names I have been calling this programme I now take back.......
