I just installed this Beta, does it work in the background or is there
supposed to be an icon in the startup section of the task bar, I do have it
listed as a startup item in my startup control panel.

I have noticed it comes out when a change is made to an application, hangs
there for a bit with the green checkmark, and then disappears, is this
normal??

What you are describing sounds like what I've seen. The icon thing is
definitely intentional.

I have since learned that it is to be expected, as this version will work in
the background, and is still active, only the icon will not be shown in the
notification area as being on.
