Hi there,

Usually M$ defender starts automatically and remains in the background and
has an Icon that appears in the task bar quick launch section. I just
reinstalled my OS and reinstalled windows defender and no longer see the
quick launch icon. Did I configured something wrong?

Also how can I tell if defender is running hte background? I want to make
sure it starts after each reboot. clues please.

Cheers,

Noah

What if that option is checked and it still will not appear in the
notification area?? For some reason in the string under msconfig there is
"hide" at the end. Can this be changed? I really want it in the
notification area because there have been times when something has occurred
but defender does not pop up to tell me. HELP!!

Hi Lora,

you put it on Always? Still nothing in the systray?
Try Add/remove software>Windows Defender>Info Repair
Let me now this was helpful.

The -hide on the start item just prevents Windows Defender window from
opening on startup, nothing to do with the systray icon.

You could right click start button, click properties, Taskbar tab, and
customize the icons. If Hide inactive icons is unchecked, the customize butto
is greyed out. Check hide inactive icons, then clkick customize, set the ones
you want to always show. Click OK; uncheck box hide inactive icons if you
wish, Apply/OK out.

WD is running but I have tried everything, uninstall and then reinstall, it
will appear right after but when I restart windows it is gone again. I don't
know what is causing the problem. I run Norton Internet security could there
be a conflict between the command of WD's options with Norton or any other
program? I open WD and it says everything is alright, but I have to check it
regularly because it won't come up on its own. I check for updates and
nothing. the version I have is 1.1.1347.0. Can anyone figure out why WD
wants to be a pain?
Thanks everyone. Lora

Hi guys, I'm Martin, am new and hav d same query as Lora. I too havnt seen
the DEfender "Castle Wall" icon on my notification bar since the first time I
installed this thing. Its unnerving to be only guessing if Defender is REALLY
running in the background and protecting me. I hav this strong urge to go
back to Webroot's Spysweeper. For $19.99 at least I was reassured of the
program running and protecting. Thanks all for any response.

Hello Martin;
There are two fixes referenced in this thread, one suggested by Tom Emmelot
to use WD Tools > Options to always show the WD icon in the notification
area and another one for an entirely different problem but with similar
symptoms Hide Inactive Icons in the Taskbar as suggested by JRosenfeld,
have you tried both suggestions?

I think you'll find that the current version of SpySweeper has some serious
problems right now:

Thx 4 ur response Dave. Yes, those two suggestions from Tom Emmelot and
JRosenfeld wer n fact d ones that most caught my attention. But wen I go to
Tools>Options in Win DEfender I see no "always show on notification/taskbar"
option. There is only "use real time protection," which I already clicked. AS
4 d hide inactive icons, Defender does not even appear. I did, however, see
on the "processes" tab (wen u press "control+alt+delete" and get the dialog
box) <wdfmgr.exe>. I wonder if this refers to windows defender. Even so, one
wonders wat it wud take 4 Microsoft to make the defender icon readily seen on
the notification bar. Thx again 4 any info/suggest. Martin

OK... If your on a current release of Windows Defender from Help / About:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0

then there is such an option on the WD Tools > Options window. If your not
at that release you should go to:

Version 1.1.1347.0
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en

But I think maybe you didn't notice that Tom Emmelot called our attention
to the scroll bar at the right of the Options Screen. If you move down
that screen you'll see many more options lower on the page. I'm fairly
sure that's why you have no icon showing, many people miss that scroll bar,
and I suspect most activate always show the icon when they find it.

The tasks associated with WD on the Task Manager that are usually visible
are:
MSASCui.exe
MsMpEng.exe
