Hmm - I agree with both sets of advice here--have you tried Engel's link,
which is of similar import, but differs in some details?

Yes but it did not help

I 'd go with dial-a-fix from Engel's next set of recommendations.

Google on dial-a-fx and djlizard--I think the newest version is labelled as
a beta--I'd not hesitate to use that one. This is an automated sequence
that goes through what is described in a good many pages of the official KB
articles.

Terry - can you re-try the operations today? I've now seen information
indicating that issues beyond your local machine may cause these errors.

I'd be cautious about doing stuff on your machine.

Can you try updating via WindowsUpdate?

Not today.
I tried received the error:

"The web site encountered a problem and cannot display the page."

I think I'd sit tight for a bit--I'm sure WindowsUpdate is under some stress
at the moment--maybe try it again late tonight? Some problem on your
machine because of incomplete downloads isn't impossible, but I'm still
suspecting the issue is at the other end.

OK--let's see if I have this straight: On a Windows XP SP2 machine, you
have applied all critical updates offered by Windows Update without
problems.

Did those updates include Windows Defender definitions? They should have.

And, when you update within Windows Defender, you get an error message, as
in the subject header.

I think I'd try:

Go to a command prompt in the folder in which Windows Defender is
installed--by default this is \program files\windows defender.

type:

mpcmdrun -RemoveDefinitions -All

and hit enter.

Once that completes, go back to Windows Update and do an express scan and
lets see what happens. If an express scan brings in definitions, and they
are successfully installed, go back into Windows Defender and do another
check for updates. That should complete with no error messages--just two
balloons--one at the start, and another saying that nothing was found I
believe.

And, to backtrack--this is a home machine, and not one ever connected to a
corporate domain?
