Defender final - Icon says I haven't scanned in 3 days

but the scheduled task says it is running - what gives??

Actually, I have been on many MS beta programs, and I have NEVER seen a
program that refuses to update properly, won't run, won't scan, etc. This
product worked perfectly with the previous publishers - Did MS throw all the
good working code away and start from scratch? Sure seems like it.
