Defender "Allowed Items" list in Tools group ?

I don't see anyone having or identifying the following experience.

Whenever I "Allow" a new program through the Defender interface, It soesn't
show up in the "Tools" , "Allowed Items" list. In fact the list is always
empty so I have no ability to alter the status of any programs which are
allowed.

Can someone identify if this is normal in the current beta version
(Windows Defender Version 1.1.1051.0; Engine Version 1.1.1186.0; Signature
version 1.13.1286.1) running on Win XP SP2.

Any knowledge regarding this would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem -- perpetually empty "Allowed Items" list. Also
-- the WD Help file states that "you can stop Windows Defender from alerting
you to risks that the software might pose to your privacy or your computer.
The next time Windows Defender alerts you about the software, on the Action
menu, select Always Allow." But my Action menu only has two options:
"Allow" or "Block". So, every time I open Eudora (and a few other programs)
I have to manually choose "Allow". Why is there no "Always Alow" option in
the Action menu? And is there another way to get WD to "Always Allow" an
action?

I think this is normal--you need to fill that list manually, via the browse
button in tools, general settings.

Quite right!--sorry. Go to Tools, general settings, scroll down to Advanced
Options, and hit Add. Then use the "browse for folder" dialog box which
opens to browse to the item you want to not scan.

Please note that my original question was not how to define areas "not to be
scanned", but rather why there is nothing ever showing in the "Tools",
"allowed items" list.

Example: if a program is "allowed" why doesn't it show in the "allowed list".

I suspect you missed my point on the original question!

yes, and i'd still like to know why I don't have an "Always Allow" option on
the Action menu. The WD Help File says it should be there.

I understand that you see the expected behavior would be for items you
approve to be added to the "allowed items" list. However, I also can see
that is not how the product is working.

Items detected in a scan, and set to always ignore, will be added to the
allowed items list.

If you are seeing repeated prompts for items that don't fit that category,
the way to avoid those prompts, I believe, is to manually add them to the
list of items or areas not to be scanned.

Thanks for your explanation, it was appreciated and does explain why I don't
see items in the Allow list. I would suggest that the way the program in
running is not very intuitive, and it might not be a bad idea to consider
correction. As a user, I would like to be able to review all the programs
which have been "allowed" in such an allow list so that I may be able to make
changes if I no longer want them allowed. The allow list would be a straight
forward vehicle for such manipulation. The suggestion you made is far mor
time consuming and indirect for me to consider using it.

Your complaint mirrors one made multiple times weekly, pretty much
throughout the beta--beta1 or beta2. So clearly, the way this works does
not match the expectations that the users have when they look at what the
pages display.

There's a post from a Microsoft staffer somewhere in these groups in the
last day or so which suggested, as I recall, that the prompts from real-time
protection should be read as blocking "per boot cycle"--as I'm recalling
it--rather than permanently.

I don't know what they can do to make this clearer--but I'll agree that the
current wording is confusing--and that beta2 hasn't improved on this over
beta1.

I'm having a similar problem... I can't seem to change the permissions on a
startup program from "not yet classified" to allow? Where in the interface
should I be able to set this??

"Not yet classified" relates purely to Spynet--you alone can't change that.
Your allow votes are recorded--so in the long term they should work,
however, I quite realize that this is longer than many wish to wait--I'm not
clear that I understand the model fully--probably most standard driver files
will be recognized after some additional work, I'd hope.

At any rate--using the Tools, General Settings, and scrolling down to the
section labelled Advanced Options, and using the Add button--is the way to
exclude an object or area from scanning, and eliminate the error message.
