defaults in Microsoft

Hi,

I'm having a huge amount of trouble trying to figure out how to set defaults
in Microsoft. This is what I want to do:

* Specify certain file extensions to be opened by default with certain
programs. For example: I want Winamp to be the default for .mp3, Windows
Media Player to be the default for .wav, PowerDVD to be the default for DVD
files, etc.

* Reverse these decisions at a whim

* Make Microsoft ask me before it ever opens a file with any program

Right now I'm having the problem that a program I have uninstalled (Yahoo
Music Player) is *still* listed as the default for OGG files, and yet Windows
Media Player opens them no matter what I try to do, and I can't seem to make
Windows Media Player keep the boxes checked when I check them to set the
defaults in the program...

The "Set Program Access and Defaults" utility is almost useless because it's
so course -- I don't want *every* media file opened by the same program! Is
there some way I can go through a list of all file extensions I might
encounter and tell the computer for each of them if I want one program to be
the default, OR if I want one program to automatically open it (not the same
thing!), OR if I want Microsoft to ask me explicitly what to do every time?

And if at some point I accidentally hit the "Automatically do this every
time" button when I'm opening a new kind of file for the first time, how do I
reverse that?

This stuff is driving me crazy, please help if you can....

Thanks,
Katie

here is a quick fix...
whenever you want to open a file, instead of double-clicking, right
click on the file and click "open with..." this will give you a list of
applications you can use to open the file.

in addition if you want all OGG files to open with a certain program
then find an OGG file, right-click and go to properties. It will list
what program will open the file if you double-click it. It also gives
you the option to change what that program is. There is a box you can
check that will make the new program the default for files with that
extension.

as far as one menu where you can set all file extension defaults... i
don't know of one.

hope this helps.
