Default program for file types changes

I have a client running an all XP Pro network. For their business,
they create price sheets in Excel, but give them weird file names,
such as "BasePrice2005.1", "RetailPrice2005.10", etc. None of the
files have the .xls extension, just some number like 1, 2, 3, etc. I
don't know how they do it, but somehow it works. If you click on any
of these files in Explorer, it opens with Excel.

They've been operating this way for years.

This morning, the boss attempted to open an email attachment with a
..pdf extenstion and Windows asked what program to use with a list
which included Adobe Reader. Shortly after that, he noticed that in
Explorer all those price sheet files had the Adobe icon next to it and
they wouldn't open with Excel as they had in the past. He had to
specify what program to use.

None of the other workstations are having the problem I was in the
server this morning (pcAnywhere) and was able to open all of them with
excel. We're talking files with NO .xls extension, just some number.

Can anyone tell me what's going on and how to fix it? Other than
appending an xls extension to about 60 files?

Right click on the file (ex. myexcel.1) > choose properties > on properties
box General tab > the file name appears on the top box. Type of File: 1 File
Opens with: (Adobe Icon) Adobe Reader > click the Change button > Click
Excel from the list of Programs. Then the icon will change.

Hope it works.
